Family-owned media company Star News Group is a leading publisher of local newspapers in Melbourne, Geelong, the Yarra Ranges region and the NSW/VIC Border towns of Albury and Wodonga.
In December 2012, the company’s Managing Director Paul Thomas and Creative Services Manager Chris Beale visited Manila to interview a number of outsourcing companies. Initially, they were keen to test the viability of outsourcing by hiring a designer to complete advertising typesetting for its newspaper business – with an eye for outsourcing more business facets further down the line.
Initially Star News Group engaged Salmat’s Manila-based outsourcing business Microsourcing to hire two designers to typeset advertisements for its newspaper business. Five months later, the company had increased its headcount to six people with the Manila team designing the majority of the company’s newspaper adverts.
In the second year of engagement, Star News Group moved its editorial design to Manila and hired a web developer and senior programmer to assist its Australian team. Since then, the company has also employed an administrative assistant, bringing team headcount in Manila to 17 people.
Star News Group Managing Director Paul Thomas said: “Outsourcing has reduced our costs and improved our bottom line.
“The staff we have recruited are incredibly respectful and dedicated workers. We’ve taken the time to travel over there to make them feel part of the team. At Christmas, we take the whole team out. The staff see themselves more as part of Star News Group than part of Microsourcing.
“I think my main tip is you get back what you put in. If you put time and effort and dedication into the outsourced part of your business, you’ll get it back. Do not be afraid to have a go.”
